Vice Chairman Darla Sandeep Pledges Posthumous Eye Donation on Birthday
RSD_SIRCILLA: An awareness programme on eye donation was organized today at the Sircilla Municipal Office as part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight. Municipal Chairperson Jindam Kala Chakrapani attended as the chief guest.
Medical officers created awareness among the public about the importance of eye donation, myths surrounding it, and its benefits.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson Jindam Kala Chakrapani said that one can light up another person’s life even after death through eye donation and called upon people to come forward voluntarily for eye donation.
She said that according to officials, more than 2 lakh visually impaired people are waiting for corneal transplantation to regain their vision, and every year 20,000 people suffer from corneal blindness.
She explained that those who wish to donate eyes should inform the concerned eye bank / authorities as soon as possible after death. Through one person’s donation, two people can get vision. Eye donation must be done within six hours of death, otherwise the eyes will not be useful for donation.
She gave a call to take the message “Donate Eyes – Light Up Another’s Life” extensively among the public.
As part of the programme, Municipal Vice Chairman Darla Sandeep, who is celebrating his birthday today, announced that he will donate his eyes posthumously. On this occasion, the Municipal Chairperson, councillors, co-option members and officials congratulated Darla Sandeep.
District Blindness Control Officer Dr. Nayeem, Municipal Commissioner Khadeer Pasha, councillors, co-option members and officials participated in the programme.
