What are your rights when the police stop your vehicle?

RSD_What are your rights when the police stop your vehicle?

RSD- Bharat news: Many people get scared when traffic police stop them while they are driving on the road. But according to the law, just as the police have certain powers, vehicle owners also have certain rights.

The Facts (Motor Vehicles Act):

* Removing the key is illegal: When your vehicle is stopped, it is illegal for traffic police to remove the key or deflate the tires without your permission.

* Uniform is mandatory: The officer who stops you must be in uniform, and their name tag must be visible. If they are not in uniform, you can ask for their identity card.

* In the case of women: If a female driver is stopped and questioned after sunset (at night), a female police officer must be present.

The Solution:

1. Digital documents: You don’t need to carry original documents with you. Showing the documents available in the DigiLocker or mParivahan app is sufficient. The police must accept them.

2. Challan receipt: If you pay a spot fine, the police must provide an official government receipt. Asking for money without a receipt amounts to bribery.

3. Court proceedings: Even if you don’t have the documents or if there is a violation, the police only have the right to seize your vehicle in certain specific circumstances (such as driving under the influence of alcohol).
