Artificial sweeteners used in cool drinks are a threat to cancer – WHO

RSD- Geneva news:The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 13.06.2023 that the artificial sweetener aspartame used in soft drinks may cause cancer. Many businesses around the world are widely using ‘aspartame’ in cold drinks and low-sugar foods. The World Health Organization officially announced on 13.07.2023 that there is a risk of cancer due to the consumption of this artificial sweetener.

However, it has been clarified that aspartame used in coffee and tea is not as dangerous as tablets. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in obesity worldwide. Aspartame, an artificial sweetener used in beverages, has been found to cause liver cancer known as ‘hepatocellular carcinoma’ in studies. International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have released a detailed study report.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener made from two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Since 1980, it has been used as an artificial (chemical) sweetener in many food and soft drink products such as diet drinks, chewing gum, gelatin, ice cream, milk-yogurt products, toothpaste, cough syrup, chewing gum.

Cancer is also a major cause of death worldwide. 1 in 6 people die from cancer. Cancer prevention factors have been researched since time immemorial. Aspartame used in drinks has been found to have cancer potential. But up to a limited dose it does not pose any danger. According to the Calorie Control Council, aspartame (artificial sweetener) is used in about 6,000 products worldwide.
