RSD-Sircilla news: As part of the National Social Service Week – 2025, a special webinar was organized on 17.08.2025 by the Department of Sociology and Social Service, Kakatiya University. Eminent psychologist K. Punnamchander guided social work students online on the topic of “Suicide Prevention Methods”. Speaking on the occasion, he said that, currently, suicidal behavior is increasing among the youth in the society and this should be recognized as a social responsibility. He suggested that many lives can be saved if family, friends and teachers take precautions in advance. Explaining the tips for early detection of suicide tendency, he said that people often say things like “I don’t feel like I need to live”, “It would be better if I didn’t”. Withdrawal from social relationships, liking to be alone, sudden changes in sleep and eating habits, loss of interest in studies and work, severe despair, despondency, expressing feelings of depression, increased use of drugs, alcohol or harmful substances, and signs of self-harming behavior are seen in individuals, he said. Punnamchander said that it is imperative for parents, friends and teachers to respond immediately and seek counseling or professional help when such symptoms are noticed. He also suggested that in the future, social work students should take up responsibilities such as mental health awareness programs, counseling services and creating a supportive environment in the society. Speaking at the event, Head of the Department, Professor M. Swarnalatha said that the importance of social work is increasing with the problems in the society day by day. Professor M. Ailaiah, Board of Studies, Social Science, Social Welfare, Faculty Dr. K. Subhash, Dr. Y. Sahithi and research students and a large number of social work students participated.
