Facebook fraud, retired employee cheated by Rs. 38 lakh

RSD- Hyderabad news: A 70-year-old retired government employee should seem like a gentleman with a lot of experience in life. But as if age is no barrier to digital fraud, his retired life was turned upside down with a friend request on Facebook. Going into details, a young woman sent a Facebook friend request to this retired employee. Saying that she belongs to a poor family, she asked for Rs. 10,000 for a WiFi connection. The story took a new turn when the victim, who responded with humanity, sent the money. After that, the victim received messages from two other Facebook accounts in the names of the young woman’s mother and sister. In this, threats started stating that a minor girl had been sexually harassed and sent obscene messages. They terrorized her by saying, ‘We will file a complaint against you with the police’. ‘A case has been registered’. They kept on collecting money in installments by making more phone calls and messages pretending to be SI and constable in the name of the police. In this process, the cheaters robbed the victim of a total of Rs. 38,73,000 rupees. Meanwhile, the victim became suspicious after being demanded money again and finally approached the Cyber Crime Police. The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police registered a case and started an investigation. This incident once again highlights the need to be vigilant about contacts and money transactions through social media. The police are warning the elderly and senior citizens in particular to be wary of such scams.
