Shall We Conquer Stress

RSD- Sircilla news: In these times, mental stress is one of the most significant factors impacting human life. A fast-paced lifestyle, escalating competition, financial troubles, family responsibilities, fears regarding job security, and societal pressures, all these elements combine to slowly wear down the human mind. In the past, a person would grow weary from physical exertion; today, they are collapsing under the weight of mental fatigue. Whatever its mysterious nature may be, it casts a spell that transforms a human being into a mere “automaton.” In some instances, it escalates to such severity that it claims life itself. Often, society remains unaware of just how deeply a person who appears smiling on the outside is breaking down mentally on the inside. Behind the simple phrase, “I am doing fine,” lie hidden a multitude of sorrows. However, stress is not inherently evil. Up to a certain level, stress actually propels a person toward the achievement of their goals. It fuels effort, reinforces a sense of responsibility, and instills the discipline of punctuality. This beneficial form of stress is known as “Eustress.” Yet, if that same stress becomes excessive, it becomes the very cause of a person’s downfall. This is what is known as “Distress.” If stress persists for a prolonged period, it severely impacts not only the mind but the body as well. Chronic stress leads to hormonal imbalances within the body, resulting in the excessive release of hormones such as cortisol. Consequently, this gives rise to health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart-related diseases, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. The lifestyle diseases that have been on the rise in recent times including diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and thyroid disorders are all directly linked to our way of life and the stress we endure. We are constantly racing to earn a living, yet in the process, we are pushing our health to the back burner. Every individual must recognize the undeniable truth that “no amount of money can ever buy back one’s health.” It is a bitter reality that if we sacrifice our health in the pursuit of wealth, we cannot subsequently use that wealth to restore our health.”Stress transforms a person from the inside out.”Stress exerts a profound influence not only on an individual’s personal life but also on their family and social interactions. On a personal level, it manifests as issues such as irritability, anger, impatience, a lack of self-confidence, insomnia, and despondency. For some, even trivial matters trigger heightened anxiety; for others, it fosters a sense of isolation, leading to a withdrawal from social interaction and a reluctance to speak with anyone. Within the family unit, stress leads to conflicts over minor issues, strains on relationships, and adverse effects on children. The stress experienced by parents, in particular, has a severe and lasting impact on the psychological well-being of their children. If a peaceful atmosphere is lacking at home, problems such as fear, anxiety, difficulty concentrating on studies, and stubbornness tend to increase among children. Socially, an individual becomes prone to loneliness. Relationships become strained, and overall performance declines. Some individuals may even succumb to addiction, becoming dependent on harmful habits such as alcohol, smoking, or drugs. In other cases, suicidal thoughts may also intensify.“The Impact of Stress on Brain Function”Stress severely affects our brain’s functioning; it disrupts cognitive processes. This means that aspects such as thinking, memory, decision-making ability, focus on tasks, attitude, and perception are compromised. Problems such as diminished concentration, forgetfulness, an inability to make sound decisions, and becoming easily overwhelmed or confused by trivial matters become apparent. Among students, focus on academics wanes; among employees, work performance declines; among homemakers, emotional exhaustion increases; and among the elderly, feelings of loneliness become even more acute.“The Burnout Stage – A Critical Phase”If stress persists over a prolonged period, an individual may reach a critical stage known as “burnout.” At this stage, the person becomes completely exhausted both mentally and physically. Interest in work diminishes, and a sense of disillusionment with life sets in. The individual begins to harbor a deep-seated feeling of worthlessness. Currently, a significant number of people including employees, students, IT professionals, doctors, teachers, and homemakers are suffering from the problem of burnout. Constant stress, a lack of rest, insomnia, and spending excessive time on mobile devices and social media are the primary causes of this issue.“The Role of Psychologists is Crucial”In such circumstances, the role of psychologists is of paramount importance. Simply listening to a person’s distress can, in itself, serve as a form of therapy. Many individuals are unable to express their emotions openly and instead carry them bottled up inside. At such times, a psychologist acts as a friend, a guide, and a source of emotional support. Psychologists delve deep to understand an individual’s problems, analyzing the intricate connections between their thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. They identify negative thought patterns, fears, misconceptions, and feelings of despair within the individual, and utilize scientific methodologies to help transform them. Currently, many people tend to conceal their problems, claiming, “There is nothing wrong with me” or “I can handle this on my own.” However, consulting a psychologist during the early stages of a problem significantly reduces its severity. If left unaddressed, there is a heightened risk of developing conditions such as depression, panic disorders, addictions, and suicidal ideation. In particular, providing timely counseling to individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts can be instrumental in saving their lives. In many instances, a few encouraging words, a compassionate ear, and the right guidance can help an individual rebuild their life.“Therapies Available in Psychology”To alleviate mental stress, to address these issues, various types of therapies are available within the field of psychology.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Through this therapy, it becomes possible to transform negative thoughts into positive ones. Individuals are taught to identify thoughts such as “I can’t do this” or “My life is over” and to reframe them from a realistic perspective. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This therapy is highly effective for emotional regulation. It teaches individuals how to effectively manage anger, impulsiveness, and intense emotions.Mindfulness Therapy teaches individuals to live in the present moment. It helps in alleviating regrets about the past and reducing fears regarding the future. Relaxation Therapy: Through techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery, both the body and the mind can achieve a state of rest. Behavioral Therapy assists in reducing negative habits while fostering positive ones. Supportive Counseling provides individuals with the opportunity to freely express their feelings; this is highly beneficial in alleviating emotional burdens.Lifestyle Modification: By making adjustments to sleep patterns, diet, exercise routines, and daily habits, one can effectively reduce stress levels.“The Need for Emotional Intelligence”Emotional intelligence plays a pivotal role in managing stress and in maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. An individual learns to recognize and regulate their emotions, as well as to maintain positive relationships with others. Rather than reacting immediately when someone speaks angrily, understanding the underlying situation is an integral part of emotional intelligence. This significantly enhances an individual’s quality of life.“Ways to Reduce Stress”There are numerous methods for alleviating stress: Engaging in daily physical exercise; Cultivating habits such as yoga and meditation; ensuring adequate sleep; Maintaining a balanced diet; Spending quality time with family members; and regulating the usage of mobile phones and social media. Making it a habit to take walks amidst nature and listen to music; Learning to say “no” when necessary; And, instead of shouldering problems alone, talking them over with trusted individuals. In particular, the practice of “Mindfulness” has gained immense popularity worldwide in recent times. By observing one’s present experience, without worrying about the past or the future, the mind attains a state of tranquility.“Society Must Change Too”Misconceptions regarding mental health issues still persist within our society. Labeling someone as “crazy” simply because they consult a psychologist is a deeply harmful practice. Everyone must recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. If we develop a fever, we consult a doctor. Similarly, if our mind is distressed, consulting a psychologist is a perfectly natural step. Mental health services should be readily available in every educational institution, every workplace, and every government hospital. Family members, too, must learn to listen rather than merely criticize. While stress is an inevitable part of life, controlling it lies within our own hands. If you recognize that you are under stress, do not forget to consult a psychologist.Life is precious…Stress is temporary.Let us conquer it… and build our lives.Author: K.
